Solar drinking water supply in Togo
Water sources in Togo are rare, mostly unreliable, polluted and far away, especially in the dry season and due to the growing population. So-called “water kiosks” supply the population 24/7 with up to 1,000 liters of safe drinking water per hour. Thanks to our support, such a solar-based drinking water supply system provides 910 pupils and 15 teachers with access to 5 liters of clean drinking water per person per day for a year.
The project thus contributes to equitable access to affordable clean drinking water and replaces the boiling of water with firewood or charcoal with solar water treatment systems.
wpd has ensured the electrification of a health center by installing a rooftop solar system.
In this project, wpd is financing the construction and repair of small biogas plants in Nepal. These plants replace open fires, thus preventing deforestation and CO2 emissions.
wpd supports the rewetting of a small area of marshland in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in collaboration with the State Forestry Institute of Mecklenburg Western Pomerania.
Within the company, many steps have already been taken with respect to sustainability.
The project has also set itself the goal of protecting existing forested areas and reforesting areas that had been cleared, preserving the natural biodiversity, as well as serving as a centre for information and training (both theoretical and practical) in the sustainable use of forests.
Traditional lighting sources such as petroleum lamps, candles or small, battery-driven lamps are being replaced by the distribution of solar lamps.
